The 1989 Pirelli Classic Marathon Released on DVD
The Pirelli Classic Marathon is a celebration of a Golden Era of British
rallying, bringing together an amazing collection of vintage cars for an epic
journey across Europe.
The Classic Marathon combines speed tests, long runs through glorious scenery
and gruelling climbs through mountain passes in the longest event of its kind
in the world.
In 1989, a fantastic line-up of cars and competitors gathered in London for the
start of the 2,000-mile event that would cross six countries. Now you can
experience this wonderful event, and some real classic car treats, on DVD for
the first time.
The review of the 1989 Classic Marathon is the first in a collectable series of
DVDs featuring highlights from this memorable rally.
This programme features the sights and sounds of Triumph, Jaguar, Healey, MG,
Morgan and even a 1934 Talbot. Among the determined drivers were some real
stars, including Stirling Moss at the wheel of an MGB, Paddy Hopkirk in a Mini
Cooper S, Roger Clarke and co-driver Tony Mason in a Ford Cortina, and
Scandinavian World Rally greats Ove Andersson and Timo Makinen.
This review follows the action from London to Italy, via Belgium, Germany,
Austria and the former Yugoslavia.
Along the way there are speed tests at the classic Nurburgring circuit, 300
miles of mountain driving across Austria and Italy, plus the incredible
challenge of the Stelvio – more than eight miles and 48 hairpins, all uphill!
Plus, there is the amazing experience of joining Moss inside the MGB as he
tackles some of these remarkable challenges.
Commentary comes courtesy of the always-entertaining Murray Walker, but the
real soundtrack to this DVD review is the evocative sound of these era-defining
motorcars.
This programme is brimming with wonderful footage of classic cars set against a
glorious backdrop of stunning scenery, and many truly unmissable moments from a
marvellous event.
