Four out of four in Mid-Wales for XS Racing
News from XS Racing (Chesterfield)
Run over 55 miles of classic stages in the Hafren, Myherin and Sweet Lamb forest complexes, the event covered much of the ground to be used on the opening day of Wales Rally GB in December and challenging weather conditions during Sunday made it even tougher for the competitors and the crew at XS Racing.
The team's top result went to Steven Smith/John Nichols, who took second overall and first in category two in their Porsche 911RS. A trouble-free run for the Porsche kept Smith and Nichols firmly in contention for the overall championship title.
Meanwhile, despite this being only his fourth rally back after a long break from competition, Peter Smith, co-driven by Russ Langthorne, took his Ford Escort Mk1 to a fine second place in class C3 as XS crews took second, third and fourth in the very competitive class. Drew Wylie and Howard Pridmore were third in their Escort Mk1, while Andrew Siddall and Colin Thompson were fourth in their similar car.
"Peter is increasing his pace with every event," said Jon Cropper of XS Racing. "But the fact that under a minute covered all three of the Escorts shows that Drew and Andrew were both setting a cracking pace as well."
This weekend (12/13 July), XS Racing will be busy at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, preparing the spectacular short-wheelbase Audi Quattro of Steve Perez. The Audi will be demonstrated on the rally special stage by both Steve and Steven Smith, and will be one of the star attractions for the 100,000 crowd.Less than a week later, the XS team will contest the next round of the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship. The Isle of Man Historic Rally runs from 17-19 July and is one of the most challenging events on the calendar.
To make things ever busier for the XS crew, they will be tending five cars from the event's central service area at the famous TT Grandstands in Douglas. Jonathan Gale (Lotus Cortina) will join the team's championship regulars Steven Smith, Drew Wylie, Andrew Siddall and Peter Smith for two and a half days of flat-out rallying on the daunting closed public roads of the Isle of Man.
